Burian, Zdenek (1905-1981).

Artist and illustrator. Generations of Czech children have grown up with Burian’s lifelike illustrations to classics by Jules Verne, Rudyard Kipling, and Karl May. As well known is his collaboration with the paleontologist Josef Augusta through which Burian produced masterful renderings of the ancient world replete with dinosaurs, wooly mammoths, and prehistoric man.

Do you have any information on another Czech artists, Josef or Joseph Vodrazka, who may have specialized in illustrations for children's books. He was born in 1900 and in 1984 was living in Prague. Thank you.

Dear Petr Vodraska:

I hope this message reaches you. I am a retired University professor, and while teaching on a Fulbright at the University of Paris in 1982-1983, I traveled to Prague and there met your father, Josef Vodrazka. We kept up a brief correspondence when I returned to the States. Things were apparently quite difficult at the time in Prague, and your father asked me to send him some art supplies which I did, though not very many. In return, he sent me, as a thank you, four wonderful illustrations. We soon lost touch, but I have always wanted to know more about him and about his work. That's why I posted my query that you responded to. Sadly, I am only today seeing that response, four years later.

Before I go any further, I will send this email and see if your earlier email address works. I will also post this message where I originally posted my query.

I so hope to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Duvert
